I made it! Well, mostly anyways. This weekend was pretty screwed and although I managed to get a couple naps in, both nights I ended up sleeping straight through. In any case, this ends the 30 day experiment of poly-phasic sleeping.
The results were mixed, after my first week of adjusting I had one really good week where things went almost perfectly. After some screw ups that weekend it was a constant battle to get back on track. The weekends were a nightmare to stay on schedule and then I'd find myself readjusting all week. The schedule I had set for myself just did not jive with my life.
As I mentioned in my last post I have decided that I will continue, however many changes will be made in order to make the schedule work. Next weekend I will be moving in with my girlfriend, so this week will be hectic with all the packing and planning. I figure it would be best to keep my nap schedule intact even if I don't end up getting up during the night. Then once I get settled back in I will try again.
In the mean time I will continue to evaluate what changes need to be made and come up with a game plan for my next journey.

Today I woke up late again because my alarm didn't go off (the power went out). I woke up at around 9AM. I was a little late getting into work, which is embarassing. I have been getting excited about tonight because I feel that tomorrow morning will be just like Day 3. I just can't wait to get back on the wagon in this respect!
I napped only once today since I got so much sleep, at 4:00PM.
I should say that I nap usually 20 minutes but today I napped 30. I think I'm going to switch my naps to a little bit more than 20 minutes from now on. To me, that's just not enough time to get quality sleep.
Seeya tomorrow!

Well, the first week went incredibly smooth for me. I overslept a bit but it never affected my schedule whatsoever, I was always right back on track for the next nap. It's also funny that some people say time seems to slow down on this schedule, but if anything my week flew by, but maybe that's because I was having a great time. This was probably the most productive week of my life. I've been spending about 14 hours a day, sometimes more, reading info on the same site that lead me to do polyphasic sleep, stevepavlina.com. That is far and away the most useful site I have ever seen on the internet. It is quickly transforming my life. And equipped with all this new time, I'm in a great position to implement most of his techniques right away. But anyway, about my progress with uberman, I overlept by about 30 minutes on my 10:00P.M. nap because my computer magically restarted, clearing my alarm. I hope it was just some sort of update and not a problem as I don't want to see that happening regularly. I feel though that I have more or less completed the adaptation phase because I'm wide awake during the day, and no more tired than is to be expected at night. I look forward to this journey. I think it just might end up being the best thing that ever happens to me, considering it has the potential to add 15 years or even more worth of waking, productive time to my life. That's a lot of extra accomplishments! Well that's all I can think of to say for now except this:
If you're reading this and you're currently practicing an alternate sleeping schedule, please consider creating your own sleep log on the site. We only have a few so far, and I'm afraid I'm not thorough enough with mine to be of much use to most people.

from the time i started this attempt until midnight last night (85th hour), i have slept for around 7 hours and a half (excluding naps). At midnight, i remember setting my alarm for 13 minutes instead of 15 (which i thought was a good idea). The next thing that i know is me thinking of taking the nap on the bed for no reason. When did that happen? Nobody knows! The next thing i know is that it's 9am in the morning. To me it felt like a 10 minute "junk" nap.
In conclusion, i would count this attempt as a failure and try again starting from now.

Hi all, today (tonight, 2:00 AM here) I've discovered polyphasic sleep. After some reading about it on Wikipedia, I've found this site. I intend to try Everyman Schedule, that seems to be the best to match polyphasic sleep with everyday life.
Nice to meet you all here :D

This morning was the first time since I began the Dymaxion cycle that I
wanted to quit. I felt so much worse after the nap. I'm really glad
that I didn't give in to my body's desire to crawl back into bed.
The rest of the day went according to plan, except for my afternoon and
evening naps. I still can't fall asleep during the day. My midnight nap
however, was a different story. I awoke somewhat refreshed but now I
just feel exhausted again. For the first time in my life, I can see how
sleep deprivation can be used as a torture mechanism. But I'm glad that
there have been no oversleeping accidents. *knock on wood*

Hi Everyone, My name is J. Clark and I just found out about this site tonight. I actually started my polyphasing sleep adaption just 3 days ago. At the time I didn't even know this site existed or that there was any unified place for "poly phasers". I actually had set up a site for blogging and recording the entire process. I want to really keep track and record a lot of information: health, unscheduled sleeping, social changes, etc. Feel free to check it out. http://jclarkinstalls.com/articles/?page_id=4.
I will also try to copy all my daily logs and posting over to this site as well. Just can't do it right now. Just a couple more minutes before my next "nap". Really Nice to find a site for support while I try this.

I´ve had a few VERY vivid dreams during the last three days. One was so intense, that it woke me three times in one-minute-intervals. I had fallen from my bike two times during my shift due to lightnig ice, ( Leo tells me that this is the english word for the kind of ice that forms within seconds and is almost invisible due to being extremely thin and transparent.) and my mind seemingly wanted to give me a full replay in 3D (sensations included). So I was dreaming to walk along a tilted sidewalk covered in lighting ice, which of course spectacularly made me fall to the ground. Every fall woke me up..... Damn, that was strange. For a short time I feared this dream would haunt me for the rest of my nap, but after three repetitions it was over. Thank God....
So far, I´m perfectly on schedule, yet still awake during almost 60% of my naps. I´m feeling quite fine though, almost no sleep deprivation. Who needs sleep?
Moreover even the slightest amount of coffee is nuclear power in my veins. I´m used to reacting heavily to caffeine, but this is a new Dimension. Who needs drugs or stimulants? I got CAFFEINE!
Merry Christmas to you all.

And you know what, herre the strange thing. I AIN'T that tired. I was feeling dead tired before the nap. In fact I was feeling real bad just counting off the minutes. But about 4 minutes after I closed my eyes, nothing.
Mood: Enthusiastic
Health: Still got a slight headache
Plans: World Of Warcraft and maybe some revision.

In the last ten days I have had many constrains and have adjusted my schedule to 6am, 12am,6pm,10pm,12pm,2pm,6pm, with medium sucess, meaning have made perfect days and felt fine and have had sessions where I've overslept 2 to 6 hours. Will no longer log, but will continue to experiment for a better sleeping schedule. Thanks Poly phasers for all the great Info. Sincerely, Jason Beck

Please, body, I'm begging you. Cooperate with me. Just give me 7 days of complete obedience. Just take the abuse.
I hate having to outwit my body. I hate thinking "maybe I can just sleep on the floor" or "maybe I can drink a Red Bull at 4:00 AM"
My mind betrays me too. I give in too easily. I have to control myself
I will have total control.

This is maybe 13th day I use Uberman sleeping schedule. I do oversleep every night. I turn off alarm but I just don't wake up. I cant remember anything about that. What can I do? Should I use some special alarm voice like speech or something? Any ideas? I don't want give up. Maybe it goes easier to really wake up..

Ok, my situation is a little different now, I'm back in school
full-time and have a more flexible schedule again. This will be
technically my third try at polyphasic sleep, but the second one really
doesn't count because my daily routine didn't allow me to really make a
real effort at it. The first time, I tried to follow a straight 6*20M
and overslept by a few hours for one nap every couple of days and
eventually concluded that including a 3 hour core might be a more
natural fit for me at this point.
So here I am. I slept only 3 hours last night and have tried to take
scheduled naps but apparently have not yet accumulated enough sleep
debt to enable me to fall asleep for them. Although a little tired,
I've been functioning pretty normally and came up to the next evening
with no real issues. I decided to put my core period at ~11 or 12 to 2
or 3 am. We'll see how this goes this time.

It's not that I don't like sleeping... it's just I prefer the hours and hours awake gives me. (and the edge over others)
Also, one of the most interesting thought tricks I did last time I done the modified Uberman...(i now know it's called the Everyman). Is it's so much easier to focus, (after acclimation) on projects... talking to one's self. "Ok, silly boy we are giving up a comfy bed for what? another turn of Civ 4 or do I wanna do something productive... now where are those flux capacitor drawing again?"
Cool?
And we get the best of both worlds... Nite Owl AND Early Riser hehehhehe
Thx, I'll let you know how it goes.

11 am - I attempted another nap but ended up sleeping until 4 pm, five hours. As you could probably imagine, I'm real goddamn discouraged. Not only did I partially ruin the experiment, but I also wasted the greatest part of a beautiful day. Now what? Should I keep trying to stay on schedule with naps? Should I temporarily regress to the everyman schedule to see if that works? Is there anybody out there reading this with some suggestions...??

Nothing special to note as of yet. It's still before the time I usually hit the sack. I'll be doing a half hour sleep at 4AM.
I've also taken the measure of starving myself of caffeine for this experiment. I'll keep this blog posted with new information.

My sleep schedule is 3 naps of 40 minutes at 3am, 11am and 7pm. I haven't read anywhere that anyone has had success or failure with 3 longer naps instead of several very small ones. My decision to do this as opposed to the Uberman or Everyman schedules is based on my work schedule. I serve at a night club two nights during the week and there is no possibility of me napping while at work. I need 8 hrs of waking time to making to and from work safely without killing myself on the road.
Yesterday was my first attempt at the schedule. I overslept two of my naps and learned a valuable lesson. My alarm has to be a distance from my bed so that I am forced to get up in order to turn it off. Today, I start again. My to do list is massive, and even after yesterday's sleep-binge, every bathroom in my house is clean. I don't watch TV and I don't play video games. Time to get creative in how I fill my time...

I have known that such a thing as polyphasic sleep existed for some time. I have trouble sleeping quite often. Yesterday - after rising from a much needed nap - something clicked. I decided to google polyphasic sleep and I feverishly read the small amount I could find. I then decided that this was a worthy experiment. I have little to loose and much to gain. Already I havn't slept for a couple of days except for a couple short naps. If I can successfully adapt to an uberman sleep schedule I will regain my sleep and, experiment with altered states of consciousness, and live what may as well be an extra life during my extra 6 hours a day. My schedule will be as follows: I will sleep every 3.5 hours for .5 hours beginning at 0330, 0730, 1130, 1530, 1930, and 2330. I will be using a white noise mp3 during my naps. Thus far I took a nap at 1930. It is currently 2227 so I will attempt another nap in an hour. I will report my results this time tommarow.

Well, it looks like I'm back to my ridiculous amounts of sleep. I do feel more tired again, and the headaches have returned, but there is no way that I can continue. Even when I changed the naps to capitalize on any time I got, I couldn't wake up to an alarm clock. Now, I am stuck with that 12 hour sleep and can't figure out how to get up earlier than 9. I usually sleep to then, and very rarely later and rarer even less. It doesn't matter how much sleep I get it seems (with exceptions like napping). I wish I could get back into poly-napping, but my job and school hate me and like to change every week, and school just doesn't have the same nap times as the previous ones did. I enjoyed the napping, but the hardest part is adapting. I tried to get back on, but the problem is that I can't get a alarm to keep me up. I can wake up, turn them off, then fall back to sleep. I even had puzzles that I tried to do, but I just felt like curling on the ground, and two hour later I awoke. So, I guess as long as I can't nap I have to have that long sleep which makes the day feel so much shorter.

I think the biggest problem is my roommate. I go to a boarding school,
so I have to room with someone. I try not to disturb him, especially at
3:50 in the morning.
I gave blood day before yesterday, and that really messed me up. It was
my first time and I felt horrible afterwards. I fell asleep at 23:30
that night and didn't wake up until 6:30 the next morning. But I did
good the rest of the day. That makes me happy, and it means that I'm
starting to get accustomed to sleeping at odd times of the day.
I go home this afternoon at 4:00 which means that I probably will be
missing my 19:30 nap. My parents don't know about my change in sleep
patterns. They won't get it, which means that I really need stick with
my schedule and get in some good sleep.

This is the schedule I'm currently trying to run on - I say trying because EGADS do I get zombie-mode during the day at work from 10am to 2pm-ish, sometimes lasting longer. It's a good thing my coworkers aren't the rat-me-out type or I'd probabaly be fired.
Everyman Schedule
Core Sleep 5am-8am (Currently considering an extension to 4-8)
Awake time: 5 hours
Nap 1 - 1pm-1:20-ish pm. Taken at work in my car.
Awake time: 6 hours
Nap 2 - 7pm - 7:20pm. Taken after I have time to settle down from my commute from work.
Awake Time 5 hours
Nap 3 12pm-12:20pm. Taken after the core meat of my day where I do things like go shopping, whatever. Also after my workout - I usually have little trouble sacking out here.
Awake time 5 hours - then back to the core at 5am.

2008-06-09 Today I began the preperations to shift to the Uberman sleep schedule, aiming to start Friday the 13th, in four days.
* No more coffein * No more candy * No more alchohole! (party on thursday, time to drink up my current stash of beverage) * 4-5 litres of pure water daily consumtion * Increased consumtion of vegetables * Daily walks 1hour+ * 30min of jogging every 2 days (+20min warmup/cooldown)
Currently I'm quite the slacker, sleeping 11-12hours a day and resting a few hours before making breakfast or getting asleep on the evening, so I'll go from maybe 10 active hours to 22 per day, will be rather sweet.
Oh well, more to come!

Today was far less successful then yesterday. Even though I did not feel tired most of the day, I overslept and was asleep for 3 hours in the middle of the day. I also started a new job today; so after I slept for those three hours I had to go to training for work (had not initially planned on starting this early, but someone else go hurt so I started) and was up for 7.5 hours before I took a nap. I now finally feel sleep deprived, and it is getting difficult to hold concentration even as I write this. I started reading initially as I woke up from the nap, but after about 15 minutes it became too difficult.
I refuse to give up though, and even with a somewhat erratic work schedule, I feel that it is entirely possible for me to adapt. Obviously adapting under a moving schedule is not ideal, but you work with what you can get. I've taken 9 naps now and have overslept on 3, which is unacceptable. Each time I look back though I see that I overslept after I pushed the envelope on how long I could stay awake (like I said before, these first couple of days were a planned start, and were all clear at the beginning, but alas Circumstance).
I have decided that I will smush naps together both before and after work, since I will probably be awake for about seven hours at a time while I am there including travel time and such. Thankfully I only work about 4 days a week, and sometimes it will only be for 3 hour stints. The next two days promise to hold long shifts in store for me, so I know it will be a very challenging adaptation. I also found that as I've been typing, that I have found it easier to stay awake and concentrate. I'm guessing my bodies adapting to the fact that I need to be writing right now :).

So I just finished one of the best nights of sleep ever, from 9am-5pm...this also symbolizes me giving up on the Dymaxion. My final thoughts are this: If someone attempted it without a love for sleeping and with more to do than just looking at screen it would be 100% doable. I never really got that tired so that shouldn't be an issue, the really important thing is that you have to be ready to not sleep much at all, I wasn't prepared for that...even though I thought I was. Anywho, I'm done with it, polyphasic sleeping was a failure because I couldn't stand giving up climbing into bed for hours and just lazing about. I do believe it's comepletely possible for anyone who truly doesn't mind giving that up though.

I've read about polyphasic sleep for about a year now, and was very excited to try it this holiday season (student). I started uberman on the morning of the 23rd and by the afternoon of the 24th I was sporting a fever of 102° F. It was probably the tail end of a bug I had for the week prior.
So that stopped. I was pretty bummed about it, but I've started up again since then and it's been a smashing success so far. I need to figure out a way to make these slightly more interesting...
Maybe explosions... Oh well. I'm sure I'll think of something.
Maybe better explosions...

The first time I heard of polyphasing was a couple of years ago, but I
never bothered reading more on the subject back then, because my source
of information told it to be pure insanity and would only get me suffer
a bunch of mental and physical illnesses. Also, back then I used to
believe at least some of the stuff I was told. Nowadays I'm more into
experimenting funney stuff myself rather than listening to random
cabbages telling me what I need and think and feel. (Oh the anarchy!)
Well, a few days ago, when feeling even more tired than usually after
staying up most of the night writing stuff, I remembered the thing
about reducing the amount of sleep you need. I did a quick search and
ended up here, and now I'm trying a slightly Everyman-ish sleeping
pattern, though of course I need to adjust it to my own life. We'll see
how it goes. If anyone has some suggestions or advice or if I'm just doin it wrong!!1 at some point, feel free to tell me.
And if this doesn't work, I might try the thing TheBallGuy suggested -
not actually reducing the amount of sleep, but cutting it into a few
larger blocks. Should be fun, too.
I'll go to sleep after about half an hour and sleep for 30 minutes.

man this week has been hell to me, i get off schedule and boom im being slapped in the face with super sleep deprivation. couldnt sleep when i wanted to, slept when i shouldnt, and slept to long at that. its time to reconsider what im doing and how im doing it. im now thinking of going to a everyman schedule because everynight this week i couldnt stay up past 0330 because i suddenly was stricken with "boredom of everything at 0330 in the morning syndrome." it sucked. during school i would have bouts of micronaps, sleep during bus ride to school and 1st seminar (im ahead in that class by a project or so, so its alright) and micronaps everywhere else. there have been countless times where i would zone out and nap and wake up and almost flip out over what time it was. even a few seconds would get to me.
earlier this week i was getting around 3 - 3 1/2 hrs of sleep at most in one go. that didnt help. thursday i got 6hrs which was amazing, my memory hasnt fully recovered but its better than it was since i started polyphasic sleep. i still kinda like how i would stay up late and do stuff but then go to bed and a semi decent hour, and by semi decent i mean early in the morning. : D
got more exercise too this week, rode my bike a little which is better than most weeks. suprised how fast i did 3 miles in 15 min considering i havent rode my bike a lot lately, and at how easily i did it too.

core: 1:50 am to 5:30 am (3 hrs 40 min) I wanted to just sleep 30 minutes but extended my core sleep a bit. It's my first day on a new job, I think I'll need the extra sleep. By noon I was very tired. I popped a 200 mg caffeine pill. Usually this will give me a kick for a couple hours. The kick only lasted 20 minutes. I guess I'm really tired.
nap 1: 3:50 pm to 4:05 pm (15 min) I wanted this nap to be 30 to 40 minutes, but I ended up sleeping 15 minutes and tossing and turning for 20 minutes. I was exhausted and dizzy by 6:00 pm. I guess I was hungry, after I ate, I was just exhausted because the dizziness went away.
nap 2: 10:10 pm to 10:20 pm (10 min)

How to gain more time and structure days successfully?
Short days come often and leave me in the evening with the feeling that there was no success on my long day. So I decided to experiment polyphasic sleeping and develop to a new personal standard.
I read the first time about polynapping in a magazine about one year ago. Since my first experiment failed on the first days, I'm going to make a schedule and write down protocols, using an alarm clock to ensure that napping phases don't become longer than 30 minutes.
It is proven that REM as well as SWS phases, that are important for clearing memory and recovering, concretely for abolishing adenosin, also appear during short time sleep periods.
Miserably, the human body will need time to adapt to this new schedule. Long term appearances are not learned yet and the scientific view seems to be ambiguous whether polyphasic sleep will really ensure the same recovery rate that our monophasic sleep does.
Still, I am convinced by arguments that strengthen the abilities of polynapping.
So I will write a concrete plan that ensures fullfilling protocols every day about the exact sleeping times I enjoy.
The schedules will be revealed in the following weeks; starting point is set to August 1. With the help of my friends and family and of course the community, I hope I manage to *survive* the first weeks!
One Step closer to Paradise,
Phil

Starting again
I failed the last time, so I took a week or so to reconsider if it was what I wanted. And here I am again. First sleep period, 23:30 to 00:00, completed. I had the extra advantage of my brother, that was awake to wake me up when the alarm sounded.

I've been doing it biphasic for about a week now without knowing it. It was originally just to deal with my particular schedule for a few days, but I noticed with less sleep I was feeling more rested, getting up was easier, etc. So I kept doing it.
About a week in it got to where I was curious/concerned about long-term effects, so I googled a few phrases and eventually turned up the wikipedia article about polyphasic sleeping. After I got past the standard webmd and such about how much you should sleep and all, and the requisite useless "yahoo answers" pages damning anything but 8 hours.
Looks promising. Biphasic is pretty simple, and seems like a good way to start. In particular, it seems to be what the body naturally wants, and there's certainly alot of "logical evidence" to suggest that. Probably I'll move on to Everyman at some point, but I'm not trying to rush it.
For background, I'm in the US Navy, and alot of us have been polyphasers by necessity for years without knowing it, at least while on deployment. The Air Force apparently has done a bit of research into it, and one reason Hell Week sucks so bad for the SEALs is the adaptation to what is basically uberman, though they don't call it that. Particularly useful to me, as I'm contracted to cross to SEAL in a year or so... I'd imagine if I'm already doing everyman on my own by then, I'd have a pretty solid edge. I'm new to the whole thing, so I'm looking forward to it and all the free time I'll have... when the Navy doesn't demand it, anyway.
For now, I've been doing a 4.5 / 1.5 split, edging more toward 4 / 2 most days. The flexibility I seem to have to flip it (do 1.5 / 4.5) if I have a need (and I often do) is also nice.

Reason for doing this? It looked awesome and I pride myself on being able to do feats of willpower most other kids my age would fail at.
Okay this is actually my eighth day on the uberman schedule this blog will be somewhat longer then the others to catch up.
10/1: Didn't even try to nap during the day, but did at night only
10/2: Very few symptoms and stuck to the schedule well no significant sleep dep yet.
10/3: Sleep dep is setting in feeling amazingly dumb and nod off if I'm not engaged at all times
10/4: Okay this is the worst of the symptoms I experienced, Went for a walk to stay awake and ended up falling asleep every second step (luckily the jarring motion of my other foot landing made me wake up every time), eyes wouldn't focus and I even worried a bit I would fall asleep there on the sidewalk. Spent the night on my feet, cleaning and washing dishes, I feel cold all the time and showers just make me sleepier after(I took like four anyway, this is my least favorite symptom).
10/5: I thought the narcoleptic symptoms were supposed to be short-lived, mine last anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half. I seriously worry I wont adapt, by morning however my brain is clearing I'm not 100% or even 50% but its progress, this might work.
10/6: Still getting better though this is nasty only really competent 10 am - 10pm after that I’m a zombie again
10/7: Ended up adding an extra 20 min nap at 7:30 am in weakness didn't seem to work and I fear ill end up paying for it.
10/8: Overslept my 6 am shift by two and a half hours, sticking with it though I’ve come too far and I can already see this schedule working
10/9: Paying for that extra nap still (Stupid 6am nap it is my bane!) couldn't concentrate for the four hours leading up to my 10 am nap and nodded off several times, luckily not for any significant time. Ended up going back home for the weekend so first attempts to sleep in a car limited success. I find it’s hit or miss if I sleep in strange locations, I keep my eyes closed and don't open them trying not to think as much as possible till the timer goes off. I doze mostly its, not REM sleep, but its definitely better then nothing seems to affect me just as much as those weird naps where I wake up thinking I overslept when in fact it was the perfect length of time. No trouble at all with nighttime naps except that dang 6am oversleep.
10/10: Overslept by FOUR HOURS! gah! if that continues I’ll have to consider quitting, going to stick with this for a month I figure and if I can't get my ducks in a row or the symptoms aren’t 99% gone I’m quitting and I’ll try again during winter break. Today wasn't easy obviously I missed my 10 am shift (or was quite prompt with it depending on your perspective) the others were difficult because I was in a car for the rest of the day, some fifteen minuet schedule shifting was necessary and I did dose for an hour after my 2am. (On the plus side my sleep debt feels 100% gone) the rest of the naps were at a friend’s house and not all that effective.
10/11: back on track as of now waiting for 6am nap, symptoms are moving back later and later, despite my screw-up’s, I'm quite capable at night and only mildly impaired during my 2-6 shift we'll see if 6-10 is better or not.
Disappointments... I was actually looking forward to vivid dreams and maybe even lucid dreams (I've only ever had one) but sadly my dreams are no more vivid then before, I actually survived this entire week without internet (New level of boredom) we finally got hooked up just before I went home for the weekend so I expect nights to be much easier. Also as far a symptoms go, I was glad to forgo most of them wish I could have skipped the constant feeling of cold (I bought a nice new sweater an that helped a lot), but hallucinations were the one I kind of wanted to encounter (For bragging rights) no such luck and all I get now is the mundane fogginess and mild narcolepsy (getting really old)

| As the semester rolls into a close, I find myself reflecting on it. I thought of the sleep schedule and what it meant to my life. Without it, over this past month or so I'd have slept about 200 more hours than I did. Is it a blessing or a curse? Have I come to need it or could I go back if I wanted? Is it a tool for me or am I simply using it for selfish means?
To explore the pros, I'll start with what I did: what did I do with that time? Was it well spent or could it have been happily traded for simple, rapturous sleep? Could I spend it better or is there a barrier between myself and the things I want to do that is beyond simple temporal capacity? How might I go about tomorrow in order to do better than I did today? I'd say I could have spent my time better for sure. I need a bit more discipline at regulating my time to different tasks. I find myself wandering more now that I have a little room to wander.
The cons are harder... When my friend who started the schedule with me decided to drop the schedule for the holiday season and pick it back up before school starts again, I couldn't help but want to join him. But I couldn't pull myself away from the extra time. This begs the question: have I become addicted to this extra time, this extra space to wander? During the holiday season, what will I do with all my extra time? Will I use it to play vast amounts of video games and read the obscene amount of books I hope to get for christmas? Will I use it to better myself physically and train my body and mind as one? Will I use it to better my relationships with family and friends? Will I say to hell with my own problems and try to save the world instead? I don't know. But I'll be damned if I don't try to make the best of it.
Overall, I'd say that I'm extremely happy with the schedule. I have tumbled around the schedule a lot. With my family jumping in and out, certain concerts and events conflicting with a nap here and there, I've had my fair share of sleep deprivation. But I've come back every time with little or no extra effort. The real question is whether or not I have the discipline to stick with the schedule for an extended period of time where the extra time I get from the schedule is purely my own. Before, there was ALWAYS something I NEEDED to do for school or else. This holiday, I will be only obligated to perform actions based upon my own will and discipline to see things done. This will be an interesting holiday indeed.
Good luck again to everyone. And a little good luck to me will never hurt... from the many other me... who are rooting from the sidelines... wherever the sidelines are...

It is the 2nd day of December 2009, and I have failed another night. I can not keep my self from going to bed in the mornings. The first night I gave in and got about an hour of sleep, the next I got about 3 hours, and last night I got 6. This needs to end. My problem is I have so little to do at night I can not find any reason to stay up. I really want this sleep schedule to be part of my life, but my will is only so strong. Hard to break a 22 yr old habit. This is the last straw. I HAVE to complete this first night to get the ball rolling. I just wish I could complete some sort of task. It is a shame I have not started any projects. I think I am going to find some kind of project online and try it. I just hope I find something that sparks my interest. Another problem is the lack of support I am receiving. Other posters where not kidding when the said people will find it weird. No one gets the mind set. To me it is not just about the extra time, I also want to be able to function when situations arise that require this kind of sleep schedule. Also, life is to short to spend staring at the back of your eyelids. We must enjoy our lives. Tonight is my night!

So, I'm a medical school student, which some of you may be thinking then that I am in this just so that I have more time to study and what not. That's actually not really the case, I at the moment have plenty of time to study. I am smart enough that it doesn't require me to study all that much to get it all. What I don't have is strong enough motivation to study and I find myself sleeping for 3 hours in the afternoon most days ( I don't set an alarm) just because Idon't care and having a difficult time waking up. I've considered giving this thing a try, I'm not sure why probably for the same reason that everyone wants to try it, it's just so different. So it's 4 AM. I figured I would just start today, I slept this afternoon from like 12-3 and wasn't tired at midnight...I'm going to be doing the uberman with naps at 3, 7, and 11 AM and PM. I tried to take a 30 min nap at 3 AM. It didn't go all that great, I never really slept I don't think, but I'm really not tired. I got up, got a drink of water and did 50 pushups. I figure that i might as well get jacked while i do this thing and I just plan on doing pushups after every nap or something to make sure I'm awake because I've been known to wake up and then just go straight back to bed (been known is and understatement). The thing that interests me the most is whether or not I will have troubles with my memory. I'm really hoping that it makes me more motivated so that when i wake up from a nap I'll be able to really hit the notes and want to do so. I also have a bunch of other stuff I like to read for fun that i'm looking forward to doing and I'd like to learn greek, so we'll see where this all goes

Well looks like I have been defeated for now. I went to sleep at 4:30 ish andwoke up at about 11. I ws feeling really hungover and really ill. So after a couple of hours of lying on the sofa and going to throw up. I decided to go to bed. I only got up about an hour ago. I don't know how I have managed to sleep for soo long.
So I am going to stop for now and I am going to try again next weekend.Hopefully I'll do better then.

I feel a lot better today. I'm completely ignoring the advice about skipping caffeine. I'm on the Dymaxion schedule, which looked like the hardest, but I had to choose it for work. It's my third day of trying, second to be doing it on schedule.
I'm so excited about the possibility of extra time awake that I'm not having too much trouble leaping out of bed when my alarm goes off. I've always hated wasting 8 hours of my life. I just couldn't handle wasting so much of my life. But the fourty minute stretches I'm doing now; I can handle that. That's not too much to give up. And since I have the six hour shift, the caffeine has time to wear off, so it seems to really be helping me adjust.
In fact, I'm dropping off a lot more quickly, and I woke up ten minutes early (after 30 minutes) from my last nap, and had to check my alarm because I thought I had heard it go off. But I managed to go back to sleep again. I'm not certain enough yet that I'm getting enough sleep or I would have gotten up. What I can say, though, is that I feel rested. My head hurts a little, but mostly I feel fine. I am wondering if it's the caffeine, but I suppose time will tell.
Tomorrow is the first day I'll have back at work while trying to keep this schedule. I hope that I can keep it up! I'm already in love with this new schedule. I feel like I've had an epiphany.
I hope they don't think I'm crazy at work :p I don't plan on telling them anything except that I am going to take lunch at 4. And I'll be a little early on my nap before work. I'm going to try to make it work this way.
I'm still so excited I can't believe it. Good luck to all others :)

So, let's start by the end of day 1... My 9:00 nap, that I took at 7:00 to arrive on time for a party, has gone not verry well. I slept probably for max 20 minutes, on 40. I drank a Coke that gave me a lot of energy, but it didn't lasted. At 12, I quit the party, a little bit because I was tired, but mostly because girls were all leaving, and guys became as overrepresented as unrespectfull. Damn, at one point I was dancing with a girl, and a guy came by her back and litterally took her away from me! And to add the insult to the injury, he just left her alone after 30 seconds. Plus the messy security caused a massive free-for-all lineup... Man that chilling was weird...
Anyways, sorry for the little rant, I think I'm tired. ;)
The 3:00 - 9:00 period should be weird for me. Last night my father was not home, but tonight he is. He's usually waking up at 6:00, and he will see me awaken... Pretty weird given that I came back from a party at 1:30. As I said he'l probably disaprove my idea of fucking up my sleep pattern. But anyways there's no school this week, I have the right not to sleep, eh? (Yeah I'm Canadian).
Hey I tought about it, and I really fear not beeing able to get up at 3:45. I think I'l double my alarms.

I slept from 10 am to 2 pm. 4 damn hours. It's weird how that seems like so much now. I woke up and I felt like I wasted my entire day. It used to be that I could sleep for 9 or 10 hours and feel guiltless. I bought a dry erase board to better keep track of things. I also bought a physics for dummies since I'm a dummy and I'm interested in physics. Should keep me entertained.
