Hi everyone,

I have started alternating my sleep pattern, but I am having problems getting to sleep. Maybe its because of the sunlight or I'm just too energized to fall asleep. I'm sure this will all change once my body is used to my new sleeping schedule, but for now I am finding it very difficult. Does any one have any advice?

Use placebos's sleep track. The white noise really helps me get to sleep.

Thanks for the advice. I have been trying to eat certain types of food that might trigger sleepiness. So far I've been trying to eat foods high in tryptophan. If your not familiar with tryptophan, its an amino acid that gets converted into melatonin and serotonin, which is known to help induce sleep. Some of the foods on this list would include oats, bananas, and peanuts. So far the bananas appear to be working and takes about 30-40 min to make me drowsy.

I was just hoping to add more sleeping tactics to my list. Does any one else have any suggestions to help induce sleep?

Eat after waking up, not before napping. If you have a full stomach you will have a harder time waking up and will feel groggy.

You can also try increasing your exercise levels to drain this excess energy.

And of course, avoid caffeine, nicotine and other stimulants.

If you think sunlight might be an issue find ways to make the room as dark as possible. Window blinds as well as a think blanket or something might give the effect of night time.

Have you tried sitting upright with your eyes closed and just focusing on your breathing? I find that after about ten minutes all my thoughts float away and I'm sort of sleepy.

Bananas? Are you sure? They make me quite hyperactive!

To fall asleep, I conjure shapes on the reds of my eyelids. It works.

Something I just thought to mention, you were talking about using tryptophan from foods to induce sleep, you may want to consider 5-HTP. It's a natural supplement you can get at most any health food store. 5-HTP is the precursor to trytophan, which is in turn the precursor to melatonin.

It is said to be a great mood stabilizer, as well as a natural sleep aid. I just did a query on Amazon.com and saw that they sell it there, so I will be adding it to the Poly-Phaser's store shortly.

Melatonin's a good idea, too. You body secretes that naturally when it's time to sleep.

one way to help you fall asleep is to think of something you enjoy doing. this takes your mind off things that are going around you. Another good advice is to meditate. It allows you to lower your blood pressure and relax your muscles. Before you know it, you'll be sleeping.

Why fall asleep? Research shows that lying calmly and even trying to relax (not succeeding) is just about as beneficial as regular sleep. There was also a large placebo effect related to this, but the difference was still noticable. Give it a shot. Even lying with your eyes closed will help train your body and by the time you hit your next nap, I bet you'll be ready to fall right asleep. Just remember, snooze buttons are the devil.

I count in binary on my fingers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5q6fQZdwCpM I find it requires too much concentration after getting to 31 on one hand, so I count to 5 on one hand, then to to go six I count one in binary on the other. count more, then 12 (is in the 10 or "2" space on opposite hand). It's easier than trying for 1023 which just wears the hands out

theoretically, just layin in bed trying to sleep and getting up after your time is up and doing that over and over again on schedule will eventually make you exhausted until at one point u have to fall asleep, the trick would be to make sure the time you end up falling asleep u still wake up after your time is done, after that point assuming you do'nt oversleep u should'nt have anymore problems falling asleep, your main problem will have shifted to staying awake. smiley

Make sure you use your sleeping spot (bed, couch, tree) as a place to sleep and sleep only. Do so and you start associating it with sleep and find it easier, eventually, to fall asleep. My bed used to double as my work station and it was a bitch - still is, actually - to fall asleep there.

About half an hour/fifteen minutes before sleeping, relax. Either take a warm bath or stretch or meditate, whatever gets you going.

Something I've found really useful: the savasana yoga pose. Instructions, courtesy of the Wikipedia article:

# Lying on your back, spread arms and legs, about 45 degrees from the sides of your body. Tilt head slightly back so it rests comfortably. Make sure you are warm and comfortable.
# Close the eyes, and start by deepening the breath using dirga pranayama. Allow your whole body to become soft and heavy, letting it relax into the floor. As the body relaxes, feel the whole body rising and falling with each breath.
# Scan the body from the toes to the fingers to the crown of the head, looking for tension, tightness and contracted muscles. Consciously release and relax any areas that you find. If you need to, rock or wiggle that part of your body from side to side.
# Release all control of the breath, the mind, and the body. Let your body move deeper and deeper into a state of total relaxation.
# Stay in savasana for 29 to 39 minutes.

Relaxation is key. The more relaxed you are, the easier it is to fall asleep - and the better rest you will have.

Avoid any napping schedule?

I've always just napped whenever I "hit the wall," and never used any schedule. After a few days my nap-cycle evened out. Since I wasn't sleeping for many hours every night, the sudden urge to nap was nothing I could ignore.

wbeaty,

If you only nap when you hit the wall, do you still nap only for 20minutes??
If so, what if you wake up from your nap and still feel like you hit the wall, do you just take another nap, and another and another??

I found that picturing extremely complicated 3-D objects and processes causes me to fall asleep almost instantly, but I would only vouch for myself.
