Here is an extract from my blog. This happened in two naps yesterday but did not happen in my morning nap today. I think it's probably a result of the transition process, which is a shame because it's really amazingly cool. I'm just wondering if anybody else has had experiences like this:
"This is crazy stuff, listen to this: I got into bed at 2pm exactly for a 20 minute nap, but the dog kept whining and pushing the door so I couldn't sleep. After ten minutes I got up and shut him in another room where I couldn't hear him. I reset the alarm for 2:30 so I'd get 20 minutes proper sleep. Well I tried to get to sleep, but instead I went into a sort of hypnotic trance. It was like being asleep (I couldn't move any limbs, but oddly I wasn't bothered by this at all) except I was fully conscious. I know what a hypnotic trance feels lie and this was definately one. Then it finished and I sprang right back into consciousness at... guess what - exactly 2:20pm!"
The same thing happened to me on the same day with my 9pm nap. I *felt* myself fall asleep and I knew that I was asleep, but I was still conscious. I couldn't control my breathing or move any muscles and I didn't actually have awareness of either. But I was conscious and capable of clear, lucid and rational though, whilst I KNEW I was asleep. It was very odd indeed. Maybe all sleep is like this, but it doesn't get written to memory as it were.
I'd be very interested to hear what a psychologist/neuroscientist had to say about this phenomenon, and I'd love to know if it's common amongst polyphasic sleepers.

I think it's called Sleep Paralysis and I've had it more than a few times. The first time was when I woke up and I literally thought I was dead. I was still in highschool and my mom woke me up and I couldn't respond to her, or move, yet I was fully conscious. She kept coming back in trying to wake me up and it wasnt until she shook me before I "woke up." Was quite terrifying.
For me they usually come at the same time as a nigh terror, I will wake up and see something terrifying that's not really there and I'm paralyzed. Then after a few min I snap out of it and I'm fine. |

I've had sleep paralysis all my life. I try to hold my breath in order to get out of them since it's the only thing you have control over. No matter how often I get them though they still freak me out sometimes. I used to fall asleep at work and hallucinate that my boss was outside my door asking someone else where I was, or I'd see the door knob turning and I'd struggle to try to move so they wouldn't catch me sleeping. I'd fall for it like EVERY time. |
