I would like to better integrate IRC into the site as right now its where most of the action is. I had mentioned logging in the channel today and some people got concerned about the log being made publicly available. I had always thought it was a great idea and was a little surprised by this.
So first off, there's a new poll on the main page asking your opinion. Please let me know how you feel about this. In addition to that poll if you have a comment, or suggestion, please post it here!
I feel it is important to be made available. Most of the action is taking place there right now but the site has no indication of it. If someone is searching for an answer and it was only said in IRC they cant find it via a Google or internal search. On top of that, users might not know if there's anyone in the channel or not at the moment.
Another suggestion is just logging who is online/offline for the chat. That way users at least know they can jump in for a visit.
Or another cool option, and I would have to code my own IRC bot plugin for this, would be to allow users in the chat to flag entries for the log. So say someone asked a good question and an answer was provided, someone could message the bot and it would log that snapshot of the chat for indexing on the site.

I can definitely see the value in this, however:
-Simply reading an IRC log is not the same as getting on and chatting. Chatting is an actual communication, and interaction with other poly-phasers is what helps the community, and is what the community is for.
-I don't feel comfortable with logging IRC, as many times, it is where people would share more personal experiences and issues with poly-phasic sleep. While I consider the internet to be mostly a public sphere, I consider the IRC channel to be a more private place to talk about things you wouldn't on the forums.
If we would simply paste good question/answers as a resource for those who wouldn't log on the channel, and log who is online, I think this would be a good compromise.
